Alive Bids Adieu to Vice President Lee Hough

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, JUNE 17, 2013 – Alive Communications Vice President Lee Hough has been named the recipient of the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Christy Award for his lasting contribution to the publishing industry as a literary agent, it was announced today by Donna Kehoe, the organization’s Executive Director. The special honor will be presented at the annual Christy Awards dinner Monday, June 24, from 7 to 9:30 pm, at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St Louis.

Notice of the award follows Friday’s alert from Alive’s President Rick Christian that Hough’s Stage 4 glioblastoma brain tumor, which he’d battled successfully for two years, has spread. “Lee’s quarterly MRI last month was clear, but symptoms flared up recently and another test two weeks ago indicated that barring a miracle, he has about 2 months to live,” Christian wrote. Hough served at Alive for 12 1/2 years. Friday was his last day of work.

“We’re all devastated by the news, because it is difficult to imagine life without Lee’s loving, gregarious spirit and beaming smile. By any measure, he’s a wonderful human being, best of class. And it gave me great joy to watch him do what he was so gifted at,” Christian said, noting that Hough was at home with words, books and ideas, and counted his authors and publishing partners among his closest friends.

His clients at Alive included Lynn Vincent, collaborator of the mega-selling Heaven Is for Real, Same Kind of Different As Me, and Going Rogue; Rich Stearns, president of World Vision and ECPA Christian Book of the Year award winner, as well as Terri Blackstock, Ian Cron, Nancy Rue, Tim Downs, Jen Hatmaker, Randy Singer, Elisa Morgan, Miles McPherson, Sheila Walsh, Vicki Courtney, Katherine Reay, and many other leading literary lights.

“Seeing him in action always reminded me of the scene in ‘Chariots of Fire’ when Eric Liddell says he most feels the pleasure of God when he runs. For Lee that came with being a literary agent, and as he said in parting with tears, ‘I’m finishing well and leave with no regrets,” Christian reported.

He said that in watching Hough hug each co-worker at Alive and sister-company Bondfire Books Friday and then walk through the door the last time, he was mindful of Paul’s parting words in 2 Tim. 4:6ff: “My time has almost run out. Very soon now I will be on my way to heaven. I have fought long and hard for my Lord, and through it all I have kept true to him. And now the time has come for me to stop fighting and rest. In heaven a crown is waiting for me, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that great day of his return.” (NLT) As Eugene Peterson echoes in The Message: “All that’s left now is the shouting—God’s applause!”

Christian reported that this is a sacred time for Hough and his family as he prepares for the transition to the next stage of eternity. Rather than calling or emailing him, the preferred means of communication will be through his Caring Bridge website: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/leehough

In Christian’s notice about Hough’s health reversal, he said in closing, “Let’s commit to finish well ourselves, to stay on track, steady in God. Lee would wish for nothing more. And let’s also commit to pray for Lee and his family daily, that God will yet heal him, or if not, that the Lord bless him and keep him. That the Lord make his face to shine upon him, and be gracious to him. That the Lord lift up his countenance upon him, and give him peace.” – RC

  1. Emmett Cooper Says:

Lee is genuinely one of the kindest and most compassionate men I know.

  2. Elisa Morgan Says:

Worthy: Lee is a worthy man, made so by Jesus’ love for him and his love back for Jesus. Honored: I am a woman honored to know Lee and by his willingness to know me – and bring me forth. Grateful: I lift my broken heart and grief-laden shoulders to thank God – even in this – for his faithfulness to us everyone. Yielded: With cracked souls and pried apart hands, we hold our beloved Lee and his family up to the light of God’s perfect love and ask that he will growingly release the absence of here and experience the presence of there.
