Brennan Manning’s parting gifts – The Prodigal and The Ragamuffin Bible

November 5, 2013—Colorado Springs, CO– Zondervan today released two posthumous works by long-time Alive client Brennan Manning, who died in April. Manning had long desired to write a novel that reflected his signature “ragamuffin” themes of grace and forgiveness. The Prodigal, coauthored with Greg Garrett, is about a broken pastor who’s lost everything, and is gradually wooed back to wholeness by the least likely person on earth. One of the characters in the book, Father Frank, is loosely based on Brennan’s life.

The NIV Ragamuffin Bible offers a collection of Manning’s painfully honest, yet grace-filled devotions, and reflections of his life of limping, much like the prodigal son, towards home.

“These books are essentially parting gifts from our friend, Brennan,” said Alive President Rick Christian. “Till the very end of his life, he was always looking for new ways to tell others that God loves us just the way we are, and not as we should be. We miss Brennan, but can’t help but smile, thinking of the joy he has, finally being with his Abba Father. We’re also grateful that the Ragamuffin legacy will be passed on in this memorable work of fiction, and a great new Bible.”

Manning was most renowned for his contemporary classic, The Ragamuffin Gospel (Multnomah). In addition, he also wrote Ruthless Trust (HarperOne), The Furious Longing of God (David C Cook) and Abba’s Child (NavPress). His memoir; All is Grace (David C Cook), came out in 2011. Just prior to his passing, Manning completed an ebook, Dear Abba: Morning and Evening Prayer, in collaboration with John Blase, for Bondfire Books. – DC
