    Jerry Yang

Jerry Yang is the $8.25 million winner of the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion, outlasting over 6,000 other players, many of which were far more experienced. His journey from poverty to riches is remarkable. He was born into a poor family in a small Hmong village in Laos, and his father heard the Christian gospel from American missionaries who came to his village when he was a boy. At the age of seven, his family fled from Laos because they were threatened by opposing communist militants and landed in Thailand where they spent four years struggling in a refugee camp. Eventually the family was granted asylum in the US and were moved to the impoverished projects of inner city Nashville. Yang learned English, and studied to receive his Masters degree in health psychology from Loma Linda University in Southern California. He has worked in the health care industry and the foster care system.

One day while watching ESPN, Jerry and his wife saw the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event. Despite never having played poker, Jerry decided he wanted to win one of those tournaments and use his winnings for good. Two years later, Jerry became a millionaire overnight and donated more than one million dollars to charity organizations, family, and friends. Yang’s victory created an immediate buzz in the poker world, not only because he was new to the sport, but also he has been publicly outspoken about his faith and the importance of family in his life. Jerry Yang is married and has six children.
