Nate Self graduated from West Point in 1998, and served in Kosovo before he was selected to serve in the Army’s elite 75th Ranger Regiment as a platoon leader. He was deployed to Afghanistan shortly after 9/11 as part of a special operations task force with the mission to kill or capture Taliban and Al Qaeda’s top leaders. Once there, Self led his Ranger platoon into the teeth of an Al Qaeda strong point to rescue a missing and captured Navy SEAL on top of Takur Ghar mountain, where he earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. His story of personal bravery and leadership has been highlighted on television in The Discovery Channel and NFL Films Presents specials; and in print in the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Soldier of Fortune, Army Times, Air Force Times; and three recent military non-fiction books, None Braver, Not a Good Day to Die, and Roberts Ridge.

As a result of his example and excellence, he attended the 2003 State of the Union address as a guest of the President and was the main character on an NBC Dateline two-hour special recounting his Rangers’ actions in the Battle of Takur Ghar.

Self continues to work with young officers in the Army, focusing on professional development and shares his experiences and lessons learned in a public speaking venue. He also writes a monthly column in ARMY Magazine for the CompanyCommand professional forum. Nate and his wife Julie have two sons.

No Greater Love: A Soldier’s Story is his first book.
