    Tim Pawlenty

Leading political commentators and media specialists all place Pawlenty on their short list of anticipated 2012 Presidential contenders, though a decision by the former two-term governor of Minnesota is not expected before March.

When he was first elected governor in 2002, Pawlenty inherited a staggering $4.8-billion budget deficit. Without backing down from his campaign promise to not raise taxes, the man dubbed “T-Paw” not only managed to erase that deficit, but to cut spending, improve education, reform health care, enact cutting-edge renewable energy reform, and create jobs — all during a remarkable two terms in office that ended in 2010.

The youngest of five children born to a truck driver named Gene and a homemaker named Ginny, Pawlenty was raised in the meatpacking town of South St. Paul. He worked his way through both college and law school at the University of Minnesota. He practiced law, and his legal experience included serving as a criminal prosecutor. Pawlenty was elected to the state legislature in 1992—serving as House Majority leader from 1998 until taking the Governor’s seat.

A dedicated hockey fan, Pawlenty and his law-school sweetheart of a wife, Mary, are the proud parents of two teenage daughters, Anna and Mara.

His first book, Courage to Stand, was published in 2011 by Tyndale.
